Daniil Medvedev is back in the Shanghai Masters quarter-finals after beating Stefanos Tsitsipas in the latest chapter of their combustible rivalry.
There was little drama this time. The fifth-seeded Medvedev won 6-4, 7-5 and became only the fourth player, after Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray, to reach the last eight of this tournament in three straight years.
The pair have had verbal flare-ups in previous meetings, including in the 2022 Australian Open semi-finals.
Jodar comes back again
Earlier, Rafael Jodar also reached the quarter-finals. The 20-year-old Spaniard came from a set down for the third match in a row, beating Botic van de Zandschulp 6-7(4), 6-4, 6-2. He had previously recovered to beat Thiago Agustin Tirante in the second round and Jiri Lehecka in the third round.
The 12th-seeded Jodar, who received a warning for unsportsmanlike conduct, will next face Casper Ruud. Ruud advanced after fourth-seeded Felix Auger-Aliassime retired from their match with a suspected knee injury while trailing 5-2 in the first set.
Paul and the draw
Tommy Paul beat Zizou Bergs 7-6(5), 6-4 in the late match. Bergs had beaten Carlos Alcaraz on Monday. Paul will play Medvedev next.
The top-half quarter-final lineup was confirmed on Tuesday. Top seed Alexander Zverev meets Alex de Minaur, and Arthur Gea faces Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.
